magnetic attraction analysis 101
One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is: What am I drawn to? Plenty of people are inspirationally challenged - not sure of what lights their fire. Others are so selective about what floats their boat that not much new can get past their preferences.
Whether you’re confused or highly particular, curiosity is a form of power. Use it.
What are you attracted to? Make a list.
Here's mine. I'm attracted to, intrigued by, enamored with...
1. Pure rose oil, that's so pure it's peppery.
2. Kids.
3. People who are comfortable in silence.
4. Convents.
5. Old Egypt.
6. Word economy - saying a lot with a little.
7. Inquisitiveness!!!
8. People who are confrontational.
9. Old African men who smile with their eyes.
10. Scars.
11. Innovation.
12. Alleys.
13. Musicians who have never worked a day in their life.
14. Wealthy, self-made entrepreneurs who aren't excessive.
15. Philanthropists.
16. The seering brilliance and heart of the TED talks.
17. Filthy at the end of the day construction workers.
18. Rothko paintings.
19. Elvis in 1969.
20. The greeny turquoise with brown flecks.
21. Cosmology.
22. Nests.
24. Gold. Can't get too much gold.
25. Great teeth.
26. Text art.
What's on your magnetism list? Now ask yourself what’s so interesting, or soothing, or sexy about the things that you gravitate towards. Go with the first thing that enters your mind, no matter how silly or grandiose it may seem.
I can see a pattern in my attractions: mystery, hard work, glamor, sacred devotion, currency, artistry. Sounds like the essential ingredients to the masterpiece I want to create, or my everyday my ideal life.
Being aware of not only what we are attracted to, but why we’re attracted to it, gives us access to the most tender and creative places within ourselves. If you put your finger on the magnetism, you can attract more of what you want into your life.

As always - we're right in sync. This is such a big topic for me right now.
Last week was my first time back at a big gem wholesale show in six years. I went with a list of what I thought I wanted to buy. I bought nothing on my list. Instead I came home with very tiny faceted gems, multiple strands of even smaller raw diamond beads and assorted other tiny, sparkly wonders. I've never bought anything like these pieces, had no idea why I was drawn to them and no clue how I would work with such teeny components.
But there lies the exciting part. I'm having to create a whole new design vocabulary or maybe a lexicon ... how to translate my vision and style into this new work? Last night, after days of trying this' and thats, putting things together and taking them apart, I've made a breakthrough. This whole process is opening up all sorts of possibilities driving deeper into creative and personal exploration.
Thanks Danielle for giving me more fuel to feed this intensifying flame!

Your comment reminds me of the post I wrote for Danielle's old site on using your intuition to choose beads: http://carrieanddanielle.com/the-perfect-gift-for-a-friend-intuitive-beading/

EXACTLY! Magnetic attraction - such a mysterious thing, dark and seductive or even totally predictable. Maybe not such a mystery if I'm really listening to my heart.
First five things that come to mind right now:
Rust and how it grows
Raw diamonds
Unbleached silk organza
Tribal scarification
Nordic roots music

Now, this is the sort of post I would flag to look at and think about later... when the boys are asleep... when life settles down... when I have a block of time... which never happens. So, as you say, "Go with the first thing that enters your mind"
1) Allees in formal gardens
2) Art supply stores
3) Grad school (though never been)
4) Walking in cities
5) Red shoes
6) Architectural models
7) Lillies
8) Small houses, small spaces
9) Forests
10) Cobalt blue glazed pottery

Why??
1) Allees in formal gardens - they feel magical
2) Art supply stores - so much possibility!
3) Grad school (though never been) - romantic notion of the intellectual life (though my dad was an academic and I should know better)
4) Walking in cities - surfing the energy
5) Red shoes - joy!
6) Architectural models - looking is good, but building is better - I can still feel my exacto knife slicing balsa wood from my freshman theater design class.
7) Lillies - joy, again!
8) Small houses, small spaces - cozy, efficient... mainly cozy. Often clever.
9) Forests - I feel like my blood pressure goes down when I'm amongst trees.
10) Cobalt blue glazed pottery - Just hits my eye with a pop!!
and another one that occurred to me last night...
11) the idea of owning very little - freedom to move, to travel, to be present.

I'd say I fell on the side of 'confused'...although I do like the thrill of discovery, so I'm going to sit with a notebook today and have some fun with this. Your list, and the lists above, are a BIG help to me in broadening my focus. This is going to be fun!

yay. Thank you for another super fun creative exercise. I love thinking about this. Usually I phrase it 'what obsesses me', as I do a lot of creative writing, but what I am attracted to is another fantastic exploration.

This is an amazingly provocative brain & soul teaser again, D. Thank you. Here's my very short list:

the voices of my grown children when they are excited
tall hardworking men

delish lists. remember to ask WHY? what’s so interesting, or soothing, or sexy about the things that you gravitate towards. Big vein of gold in whatever your answer is.

Love the post!
It's taken me a while to rid myself of all the 'shoulds'. You know, the things I 'should' be drawn to. I even did a Master in the last few years, really just because my Mum would have loved that if she'd been alive to see it :-)
Now my REAL passions are coming out. Some are a bit strange and freaky - for example, I'd like to be a philantropist. I immediately want to say "yeah, right!" It's so easy to put our own dreams down, eh?

really big dogs (i mean, so big that they can barely jump)
foreign language theater (what do i understand, when i don't understand the words?)
foreign boys
memoirs
balconies
suede bags (nothing more luxurious)
cuban women who dance (specifically, the waistlines of cuban women who dance)
street musicians
choirs
priests who don't talk to me about religion (of any religion. i've had about 4 great conversations in my life with priests: orthodox jewish rabbi, jesuit, most recently, 2 orthodox serbian priests. each time i felt blessed. even though god was never mentioned)

isn't it the greatest? didn't it feel amazing to get it on a totally different level from the mundane one in which we normally dwell? this leads me to an 11th attraction-- SUBTEXT. gettin goose flesh just thinking about it. love subtext.

This is an excellent exercise. Thank you. I have lots of different passions and it was so good to see how they all relate to authenticity, earth and self healing, integration of the shadow, and fusing human passion and passion for the divine... I am slowly finding the common ground in all the different things I do... this helped!

I love this exercise. I saw this last month and remembered to come back to it. after making my list, I was able to draw common themes quite easily: creativity, uniqueness, comfort, awe, meaning, making a positive impact, and luxury. This is a good place to re-center when I'm feeling lost and fall off of living intentionally. Thank you
